Common questions
The best slicer depends on your printer. PrusaSlicer and OrcaSlicer work well on most FDM printers and offer deep settings. Bambu Studio is optimized for Bambu printers. Cura has the largest plugin library. Chitubox and Lychee Slicer are the standard choices for resin printers. All are free.
Marlin runs entirely on the printer's control board and is the most widely used FDM firmware. Klipper splits computation between the control board and a host Raspberry Pi, adding faster tuning cycles and built-in input shaping for resonance compensation. Klipper requires extra hardware; Marlin does not.
Tinkercad is browser-based and free for beginners. Fusion 360 has a free personal license for hobbyists and is the most capable free parametric CAD tool. FreeCAD is open-source with no account required. Blender is free and handles organic shapes and sculpting well.
Calibrate in this order: mechanical squareness and belt tension, bed leveling and Z offset, PID temperature tuning, E-steps (extruder steps per mm), flow rate per filament, pressure advance, and input shaping if using Klipper. Most printers only need the first three to four steps to print well.
